Givers & Receivers, Takers & Benefactors

What is your role in the Universe?

The universe has a special mission for you, and it might not be what you expect. I found this out after reading David Cameron Gikandi's book, A Happy Pocket Full of Money. Gikandi reveals many of the misnomers of The Law of Attraction, and how we overlook the ins & outs of terms and ideas we take for granted.
First, nobody becomes a "Money Magnet". This is an inaccurately incomplete concept that has become a central theme of many who sell the Law of Attraction. And second, the most overlooked concept: There can be no givers if there are no receivers.

"I am a Money Magnet." Most of us familiar with the Law of Attraction have seen this old mantra. You focus on receiving money, and it simply comes to you. So where does the money come from? We don't ever think about this detail, do we? It just...comes. This is a naive approach, ignoring that what we are, in fact, is a "Giver Magnet". Think about that. We don't really attract money itself, but rather those who can give that money. The logic is sound, but why have so many writers ignored this fact, and wrapped it in such an ambiguous idea of wandering and homeless money just tumbling into our pockets? The problem is that people have issues with the idea that we are receiving--or taking--money from other human beings. It makes us uncomfortable. We hear so often how we need to aspire to become givers, but ignore the fact that in order to be a giver, we also need a receiver. So remember when you see the term Money Magnet, what it really means is Giver Magnet.

Update your mantra: I AM A GIVER MAGNET!!!

In Gikandi's book, he shows us how there can be no givers without receivers. Sometimes we focus on receiving something specific, but the Universe instead has us receive something that is more useful, more fulfilling--even when we don't recognize it at first. The Universe picks members of teams, and even picks sides, and it decides who gives what, and who receives what.

It's a lot more difficult to receive money than it is to give money. You might find that hard to believe. You might say, "Sure, I'll take any free money I can get!" The idea sounds simple, but really, most of us are used to earning money, and expecting to pay somebody back. Money we receive usually comes with conditions, right? But what about unconditional money? Accepting somebody's money comes with its own set of challenges. The Law of Attraction teaches us that we can manifest money. Where does this money come from? Other people, of course. Now imagine that you have focused on manifesting money--you are a money magnet!--and a total stranger walks up to you and hands you a stack of $100 bills. Your reaction might first be to wonder if this person has robbed a bank and is now involving you in their crime; or, you might realize that this doesn't happen in real life, and you feel guilty to accept this unconditional money. You will feel uncomfortable, not because you cannot use the Law of Attraction correctly, but because you have ignored the lesson from the Universe: you need to become either a giver or a receiver. Before you can become comfortable with receiving money, you have to become a Receiver. And for every Receiver, there must be at least one Giver. And being a Giver is the easiest, first step in the Law of Attraction.

When you focus your energy on manifesting money, the Universe will try to help you learn how to become a Receiver. Once this is achieved, the Money Magnet turns on. But it's not really a MONEY magnet. Money does not simply suck into your wallet from the great blue yonder. It comes from people. What's really happening is that the magnet is finding and pulling in Givers. The Universe finds a suitable candidate and transforms them into a Giver. For you. This is where most money manifestations fail. When we realize that the money isn't coming from magical, unknown or unrealistic sources, but that the Universe has actually been instrumental in steering another person's money into our possession, it can feel a little unnerving. We don't see our Giver receiving anything in return, so why would they give so much and so often, for no apparent reason? Warm Fuzzies.

Have you ever donated money to a good cause, or helped out a needy friend? How did it make you feel? Good inside...warm and fuzzy...happiness. Now imagine this feeling tenfold. This is what the Universe provides to a Giver who has been affected by the Universe. The Universe has a Receiver, has found the Giver, and now gives the Giver something in return for the exchange. We can say that money is given unconditionally, but we cannot say the money is given without receiving anything in return. Are you a Giver or a Receiver?  When we first explore the Law of Attraction, many plans try to steer you straight for the receiving. Any search on the web will yield many results that begin to sound like Fast, Get Rich money-making schemes. It's easy! But is it really so easy to become a receiver or a taker of another person's money? This is where so many fail, because before you can become a receiver, you must learn the first step--the easy part: Become a Giver.

The Law of Attraction is a journey upward, and it is a process of self-actualization. Before we can reach the mountaintop, we first need to climb its low hills, and wind our way up the sides until we reach the highest level we can achieve. Each step is more difficult, requiring more focus and energy than the one before it. Some people reach a certain level and find that this is exactly where they need or wanted to be; some give up or lose faith in the Universe; or the Universe has decided for them that this IS their role. What are the steps, from lowest & easiest, to highest & most difficult?

  • GIVERS: This is the lowest step, the easiest. A giver is one who feels good voluntarily giving to others. It's usually without a singular focus, perhaps spreading this giving out at almost random--a little here, a little there. Givers have a need to fulfill, and this is mostly for themselves. They do it primarily to feel good. We really don't need the Law of Attraction to achieve this level, but if we do begin that journey, it is the ideal place to start. If this is where you want to be, there is no need to toil your way up the mountain to the next step...
  • RECEIVERS: For every Giver, there must be a Receiver. Like the Giver, this does not require any knowledge or application of the Law of Attraction. You could simply be a person who needs help, or is appreciated by a Giver. Following the tenants of the Law of Attraction can help us to become willing and gracious Receivers, but we are yet to become a "Money Magnet" at this stage. A Receiver is like an empty box, open in the top, ready to receive from a Giver. It is a passive approach, calling the Universe. The end result can lead to a lot of disappointment, even shaking our faith in the Law of Attraction. But standing out in a field with an empty bag between our legs doesn't catch a lot of birds.
  • BENEFACTORS: A person whose true role is to give might never become a Receiver. Maybe they enjoy just giving, and that is all they need to achieve. However, when encountering a Receiver who is applying the Law of Attraction, sometimes a Giver becomes a Benefactor: a person who focuses their giving primarily on that Receiver. This is a shift in perception. The Giver gives in order to feel good; but when their focus shifts to giving because the power of the Universe is working on them, the Giver gives in order to fulfill the Receiver's needs. While Unconditional Giving does not exist in its purest form, becoming a Benefactor is about the closest we can get that level of giving. Benefactors give whether it feels good or not, and Benefactors even give whether they want to or not. This is because most become Benefactors due to the power and influence of a Taker and the Universe.
  • TAKERS: Near the highest level of the journey, a Taker is one who has applied the Law of Attraction, attracted givers, and transformed at least one giver into a Benefactor. This is how leadership works. A true leader attracts followers who commit themselves to the leader's goals. Once we get past the stigma of the idea of "taking", and think about the end results, we see the dynamic power and attraction of the Taker. The difference between a Receiver and a Taker is that the Taker actively inspires Givers to give, even instructs them to do so. If following the Law of Attraction wisely, a Taker will accumulate this power and wealth for the eventual purpose of Paying it Forward. It might take years, but Takers who have attracted permanent Benefactors will open like a flower, finally becoming the most altruistic of all levels in the Law of Attraction.

So, to recap, with our without the Law of Attraction, most people are either Givers or Receivers. One cannot exist without the other. Receivers can reach a level of Taker by becoming a Giver Magnet. Remember, nobody is a Money Magnet--we attract people. Takers transform Givers into personal Benefactors, and will actively inspire Benefactors to focus on giving to them, and at a high level, the Taker & Benefactor become a single team, with the Taker assuming the leadership role, and the Benefactor assuming the resource role. At first, Takers meet their own needs first, get their house in order, spend resources on their own happiness and security. The eventual outcome of Taker is naturally return into the cycle, and to become a Powerful Giver, paying it forward, even directing their Benefactors' resources into their giving.

As we can see, becoming a Taker is the ultimate goal in the Law of Attraction. Remember, how can we give at a high level ifwe don't first learn how to take at a high level? While some people will reach a certain level and find that this is where they feel most comfortable, the disciple of the Law of Attraction will, with a lot of focus and energy, naturally ascend to this highest level of self-actualization. But remember, the Law of Attraction teaches us that this is a journey, and skipping any step will either make the journey more difficult, or lead to failure.

So what is this journey? How do we go from a desire to become a Powerful Giver to actually achieving it? First, we need to understand and apply the idea of giving. For most people, this is an easy action. Maybe you give a little to charity, or help out a friend in need from time to time. For other people, this is not so easy, and oftentimes this won't happen until a potential Receiver has helped them to take that first step. Once we are comfortable with giving, even if it is only a little, we need to learn that IT IS OKAY TO RECEIVE. It is much more difficult to receive than to give. But we need to learn how to receive so that in the future, we can Pay It Forward. At this level, just be aware of when you are offered help in any form, and ACCEPT IT. If somebody compliments you, accept it and thank them. Accept and Show Gratitude. Reach out to the Universe, focus on your needs, be aware of when opportunities open up. Eventually, a Giver will take notice or be called by the Universe to your need. When this happens, it may become overwhelming or make us uncomfortable. Here we find a person who is not only offering to give to you, but to keep giving, and to focus on YOUR needs. Ignore that knee-jerk reaction to decline their help, and instead, INSPIRE them to focus on helping you. This is when you have earned a Benefactor into your service, and you become a Taker (and remember, being a taker is a good thing). Some Takers earn multiple Benefactors. Just remember that they will heed the Universe and become part of your team. Keep your team focused on your goals. Inspire your Benefactors to steer their resources for the greater good, your aspirations, happiness and dreams. Remember, this is the Universe's gift to YOU. Use it well, use it often.

Let's read now why A Taker is a person who is becoming a Powerful Giver...
